At 6pm i was waiting on the junction where the Ardoyne Road meets the Crumlin road. There was a very light police presence at this stage. About 150 meters away half way down Estoril park there was a large gathering of Republican demonstrators who had intended as far as i am aware, to march to the crumlin road to voice their anger at the passing Orange Order parade. As can be seen from the video above, the PSNI moved in with armoured landrovers and fully blocked the estate and made the planned demonstration impossible. Youths began to throw rocks, stones and roof slates at the police. Water cannons were used next and this did cause the rioters to move off.
They moved to the junction where the Crumlin road is met by Brompton Park. Again the PSNI had the road fully blocked off with armoured vehicles and there was stone throwing by protestors. At this stage petrol bombs were also being used.
As can be seen from the video above, the police tried to stop the rioters from reaching the Crumlin road, but were unable to hold their position due to the amount of stones and petrol bombs being thrown at them. Later the rioters were able to get into position on the roof tops and there was a sustrained attack on the police force.
